Xinhua Road, formerly known as ‘Avenue Amherest’, is a tranquil avenue with towering trees lining both sides, allowing dappled sunlight to filter through the sparse foliage.
Xinhua Road is also referred to as the ‘All Nations Alley’, featuring dozens of foreign-style garden residences with diverse architectural styles. Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec designed these houses in the 1930s, a time when he was already a leading designer in Shanghai, known for his work on the Great Brightness Cinema and the Peace Hotel. At No. 36, Lane 329, stands the ‘Cake House’ designed by Hudec, featuring a blue roof that resembles a fairy tale. No. 32B, Lane 329, formerly the Swedish Consulate, stands out with its steep double-sloped red roof among the nearby houses. No. 315, Xinhua Road, is a Georgian-style English villa that was the residence of Sheng Chongyi. Today, Xinhua Road is lined with lush plane trees, their shadows cast upon the unique architecture, devoid of traffic, allowing visitors to slowly savor the historical atmosphere of this road. The road is open all year round, accessible 24/7.Xinhua Road
