Xinhua Road, formerly known as ‘Avenue Amherest’. There are towering trees on both sides of the road. The sunlight shines through the sparse parts of the leaves. It is a relatively quiet road.

Xinhua Road is also known as the ‘International Alley’. There are dozens of foreign garden residential buildings with different styles. The Hungarian architect Hudec designed these houses in the 1930s. At that time, he had become one of the top designers in Shanghai because of designing the Grand Theatre and the International Hotel. At No. 36, Lane 329, there is the ‘cake house’ designed by Master Hudec, with a blue roof, just like a fairy tale. No. 32B, Lane 329 was the former Swedish Embassy. Its relatively steep double-slope red-tiled roof makes it distinctive among the nearby group of foreign houses. At No. 315 Xinhua Road, this British Georgian-style foreign house is the residence of Sheng Zhongyi. Nowadays, on Xinhua Road, the plane trees by the roadside have lush branches and leaves. The tree shadows are projected on the unique buildings. There is no heavy traffic. You can slowly feel the historical atmosphere of this road.
