Inorganic pits, located on Suzhou’s Xishan Island, were the site of large-scale mountain quarrying in the latter half of the last century. After 2000, local authorities gradually closed the quarries and initiated reforestation efforts on the bare and unsightly stone mountains. Over the years, the vibrant vegetation, coupled with the rainwater bestowed by nature, has transformed the scars left by mountain quarrying into a rugged beauty reminiscent of the Grand Canyon.
