Xixi National Wetland Park is located in the western part of Hangzhou city, only 6 kilometers away from the main urban area of Wulin Gate, and just 5 kilometers from West Lake. Xixi has a history dating back to the Han and Jin dynasties, developed during the Tang and Song dynasties, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, declined in the Republic of China, and has been revitalized in contemporary times.
Historically, Hangzhou was known for the ‘Three Wests’: West Lake, Xixi, and Xiling. The historical Xixi covered an area of about 60 square kilometers, and the currently protected Xixi Wetland totals approximately 10.38 square kilometers. It features ten scenic spots, including ‘Autumn Reeds Flying Snow,’ ‘Gaozhuang Imperial Traces,’ ‘Fishing Village Misty Rain,’ ‘Listening to Music on the Riverbank,’ ‘Dragon Boat Festival,’ ‘Seeking Plum Blossoms in the Winding Waters,’ ‘Persimmons Reflecting on the Waves,’ ‘Lotus Beach Egret Shadows,’ ‘Hongyuan Remaining Charm,’ and ‘Reeds Drifting on the Moon. ‘ There are also three causeways: ‘Blessing Causeway,’ ‘Green Causeway,’ and ‘Longevity Causeway.’ Xixi is a rare wetland in China that combines urban, agricultural, and cultural wetlands, and it is one of the earlier national wetland parks in the country. Xixi embodies five major cultural themes: ‘Buddhist,’ ‘Secluded,’ ‘Common,’ ‘Leisure,’ and ‘Wild,’ with regional characteristics of ‘Secluded South,’ ‘Common North,’ ‘Lively East,’ and ‘Quiet West. ‘ The essence of Xixi culture is ‘One Garden and Five Places’: Hong Garden, the first performance place of Yue Opera, the sacred land of poets, the birthplace of Water Margin, the leisure place for literati, and the concentrated place of folklore. Xixi has a 300-acre plum forest with varieties such as River Plum, Palace Powder, Cinnabar, Green Calyx, Jade Butterfly, and Beauty Plum. The best places to enjoy plum blossoms in Xixi are in the Mei Bamboo Leisure Area, Mei Zhu Mountain Village, and Xixi Plum Villa, with many plum trees also planted along the Mei Causeway from Zhoujia Village to Gaozhuang. From November to December and into March of the following year, different varieties of plum blossoms bloom successively. ‘Seeking plums in the winding waters, exploring plums by boat’ is a unique way to enjoy plum blossoms in Xixi.
