Xi Garden is a large private garden in the ancient town of Xitang, originally located in Ji Jia Long on West Street, and was the separate residence of the Zhu family during the Ming Dynasty, later transferred to the Sun family. In 1920, due to the elegant gathering held here by the poet Mr. Liu Yazi and a group of literati from Xitang, the photos taken were called ‘The Second Xi Garden Elegant Gathering,’ which brought some fame to Xi Garden. The current Xi Garden, built in 1993, is a new park that no longer serves as the place for the Southern Society’s poetry recitations. It is named ‘Xi Garden’ in memory of Liu Yazi. The new Xi Garden features small bridges and flowing water, a stone lion gate hall, and a garden surrounded by brick flower-patterned corridors, water pavilions, curved bridges, artificial mountains, pavilions, and man-made waterfalls. The garden includes exhibition halls such as ‘Zhu Nian Ci Fan Surface Calligraphy Art Museum,’ ‘Hundred Seals Pavilion,’ and ‘Southern Society Exhibition Room.’ The garden is meticulously arranged with trees, flowers, artificial mountains, and pavilions, including a hexagonal pavilion named ‘Drunk on Snow Pavilion’ on the artificial mountain, which is one of the eight scenic spots of Xitang, ‘Drunk on Snow of Xiaoshan.’ On the eastern side of the garden, there is a teahouse named ‘Listening to the Waves Pavilion’ on the artificial mountain, named so because of a tall white-barked pine on the mountain that rustles with the wind. Visitors can sit for a while, enjoy tea and scenery, and find pleasure in themselves. The garden is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:30.
