Among the eight city gates of the ancient city of Suzhou, Xu Gate stands out with its legendary aura, as it is inextricably linked to Wu Zixu, a prominent minister of the Wu State. For the local people of Suzhou, it is indeed necessary to have such a city gate to commemorate their hero. It is said that Xu Gate was named after Wu Zixu, who once lived nearby, and it became famous for having once displayed Wu Zixu’s head on its gate. The gate’s archway is composed of three brick-arched tunnels, with the brick surface of the gate inscribed with a border of Ganoderma lucidum, Ruyi, and Bagua, which is very simple and elegant. On either side of the gate, there are still remnants of the ancient city wall. To the west of Suzhou City lies the essence of the natural scenery of Wu, and upon ascending Xu Gate, one can overlook the surging of the Xu River, the verdant seventy-two peaks, and the misty waters of the five lakes, hence the inscription on Xu Mountain reads ‘Gu Su Embracing Greenery’. In addition to its unique natural scenery, Xu Gate is likely valued for its strategic geographical location. Furthermore, during traditional festivals such as the Lantern Festival, Xu Gate hosts lantern fairs and other activities, making it a popular destination for Suzhou residents during the festive season. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
