Upon arrival, our primary focus is to visit an important construction of the Ming Dynasty’s founder, Zhu Yuanzhang – the Tian Sheng Qiao and Yanzhi River. Constructed over 600 years ago, these were built to facilitate the smooth transportation of grain from Jiangsu and Zhejiang to Jinling. However, it is crucial to understand that blasting technology at that time was not advanced, making the task of blasting rocks to carve out the river a true test of the ancients’ experience and wisdom.

The creation of the river and bridge was not an easy feat. The burning technique used turned the stones into an iron-rust red, from which the name ‘Yanzhi’ was derived. The excess large stone blocks were ingeniously utilized as a bridge between cliffs, named ‘Tian Sheng Qiao’. The site is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
