Yanziji Park is located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, with its pointed peak extending into the river, and steep cliffs on both sides, resembling a swallow spreading its wings ready to fly. Yanziji, along with Caishijie and Changlingjie, are known as the three famous river cliffs of the Yangtze, which were important ferry points in ancient times and are now a great place to enjoy the river views.

Upon entering the park through the Imperial Stele Pavilion and following the southern inspection path up to the top of Yanziji, one can see the steps that Emperor Qianlong used during his six southern tours, five times ascending Yanziji. Inside the top pavilion, the stele inscribed with Emperor Qianlong’s calligraphy of ‘Yanziji’ is still visible.

Upon reaching the summit, the view is breathtaking; looking down, one can see the Yangtze River rushing beneath the cliffs, and in the distance, ships are coming and going across the open river. To the east, one can see the Nanjing Yangtze River Second Bridge. As the sun sets in the west, the red sun over the river and the fiery cliffs of Yanziji resemble burning flames, and ‘Sunset at Yanziji’ is a famous scenic spot in Nanjing.

After viewing the stele near the Imperial Stele Pavilion, one can visit the important scenic spot of the Exhortation Stele on the top of the mountain, inscribed with the words ‘Think and you shall not die’ written by Tao Xingzhi. Yanziji was formerly known as ‘one look, one life,’ meaning that one could see someone attempting suicide with a single glance. Tao Xingzhi erected this stele to dissuade such actions.

Descending from the top of Yanziji, there is a Guanlan Pavilion by the river, which is also an excellent observation point, allowing one to view Yanziji and the Yangtze River from the side. The nearby Xianren Cave, formed by the impact of river water, is extremely dangerous. Additionally, along the mountain path of Yanziji, there are many modern cliff inscriptions to see.

In the eastern corner of the park, there is a Triangular Stele Pavilion, which contains a stele inscribed with ‘Monument to the compatriots who died in the disaster.’ During the Japanese army’s massacre, 50,000 people seeking refuge at Yanziji were killed while trying to escape across the river to the north.
