Yefu Mountain is about 9 kilometers east of Lujiang County. It has lush peaks, magnificent temples, many remaining historical sites and numerous beautiful legends. It is known as ‘Little Jiuhua in northern Jiangsu’. According to legend, in the Spring and Autumn Period, Ou Yezi, the father of sword making, once made swords on this mountain. There are historical sites of the sword-making pool on the mountain, hence the name Yefu Mountain. At the top of Yefu Mountain, there is a complex of ancient temples towering and Zen rooms deep – Fuhu Temple. According to legend, in ancient times, there was a child with extremely ugly appearance and blind eyes. Abandoned by his parents, he happened to be picked up by a passing tiger and brought into a cave to be nursed. The tiger also dug out a spring and cured the child’s eyes. After growing up, the child became a monk and the tiger was inseparable from him. Later, when he came to Yefu Mountain, he built a temple to settle down and spread scriptures and practice Taoism. This matter was known by Emperor Li Ye of Tang Zhaozong, who conferred on him the title of ‘Filial and Compassionate Fuhu Zen Master’. The ‘Fuhu Temple’ is thus named. There are also many historical sites and scenic spots such as Hupao Spring, Xihudun, Fuhu Zen Master Pagoda and Baoen Temple at the foot and on the mountain.
