Ying Garden, formerly known as Xing Garden, is a classical garden architecture with Jiangnan characteristics that has been well-preserved in the city to this day. It was originally built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. The name ‘Xing Garden’ was derived from the meaning of ‘harmony through movement’ in the ‘Autumnal Excursion Fu’ by the Western Jin Dynasty literary scholar Pan Yue.
The garden was originally the private residence of Xie Tingyang and part of it was the former site of ‘Zhu Yin Xuan’ belonging to Chu Zhen, which was later destroyed by war. Locals purchased the old residences of Xie and Chu families, and renamed it ‘Ying Garden’, inspired by the ‘Fairyland of Yingzhou’. The garden features ponds, water pavilions, pavilions, and buildings arranged with a sense of rhythm and harmony. The pond is designed to mimic the shape of Xi Kui, with a subtle and charming style that does not reveal everything at once. The garden’s mountainous landscape and water management create an endless charm. Within the garden, there are ponds, water pavilions, pavilions, and buildings that are sparsely yet appropriately arranged. It has served as a school and also as a refuge for the poor during times of war and chaos. It is worth mentioning that the ‘Yi Xing Chuan Fei Pavilion’, inscribed by Xu Dachang, a Yixing painter from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, and father of Xu Beihong, still stands today. The opening hours and business status are subject to the garden’s daily opening conditions.Ying Garden
