Yishang Street, with its earliest traces dating back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was known as the Prefectural Government Street or Prefectural Government Front Street and Market Street during the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, it was referred to as the Prefecture Front Street and Small Market Street, serving as the essential path from the Huzhou Prefecture to the post station.
By the mid-Qing Dynasty, it had become the main commercial district of Huzhou, earning its name ‘Yishang Street’ due to the numerous clothing shops. After the Northern Expedition, the bustling clothing shops gradually faded from people’s lives, but Yishang Street has always been a bustling area in Huzhou City, becoming a symbol of the history of Huzhou’s old streets. In recent years, through significant renovation, Yishang Street has transformed into a multifunctional area that integrates commerce, culture, leisure, entertainment, tourism, and residence. It reflects the traditional urban commercial culture, traditional water town residential culture, and traditional Jiangnan urban features of Huzhou at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, fully embodying the characteristics of Huzhou’s city. Yishang Street is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.Yishang Street: A Historical Commercial Hub in Huzhou
