The Yiyang Reclining Buddha is located in Longmen Rock, Yiyang County, Shangrao City. It has been settled there. The reclining Buddha spans a length of 416 meters, with a height difference of 68 meters. It is carved according to the natural contours of the mountain, displaying the artistic charm of the awe-inspiring Sakyamuni Nirvana group image.
It is said that the rock caves at the base of the mountain were carved by the divine Yu. Named Longmen Rock because of the stone bones that coil like a dragon. At the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, a monk named Shang Xiong built a temple at the cave, known as Longmen Rock Temple. During the Qianlong period, the county magistrate He Ran renamed it to ‘Tiancheng Temple’, meaning ‘naturally formed’.
Entering through the Tiansheng Bridge hole, one is suddenly immersed in the realm of the Buddha’s kingdom. The Qing Yiyang county magistrate, Wang Du, inscribed a plaque saying ‘Traces of Yu Flying In’. The scenic area features continuous and undulating Danxia mountain bodies. They crisscross and interlace. With gullies and water accumulations, lakes surrounding the mountain walls, and the mountain bones winding through the water. Characterized by ninety-nine bays and thirty-six heavens, it is known as the ‘Water Maze’.
