Yuanwang 1, the first comprehensive space ocean measurement ship designed and built by China, has a depth of 38 meters and a speed of up to 20 knots, with an endurance of 100 days. Launched in August 1977 and delivered for use in 1978, it pioneered China’s space ocean measurement and control endeavors. In September 2008, after completing the sea measurement and control tasks for the Shenzhou-7 spacecraft and a Venezuelan communication satellite, the ship safely returned to China on November 12th, successfully concluding its ‘final mission’.
Over 32 years from 1978 to 2010, the ship embarked on 44 ocean expeditions, safely navigating for over 2600 days and 440,000 nautical miles, and successfully completing 57 major scientific research and experimental tasks, including long-range rockets, meteorological satellites, and manned spacecraft. Known as the ‘Sea Science City’, it made significant contributions to the nation and the Chinese people, receiving collective first-class merit once, second-class merit six times, and third-class merit three times, as well as being honored with the title of ‘Outstanding Contribution Collective in China’s Manned Space Program’. After completing 32 years of ocean research missions, the ship was officially retired. On November 26, 2011, at around 15:00, the ship successfully docked at the original site of Jiangnan Shipyard’s No. 2 dock in Shanghai. On October 22, 2010, the ship was donated by the China Satellite Ocean Measurement Department to Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Company. To ensure future generations remember history and further promote China’s military industry culture, national defense culture, and maritime culture, China Shipbuilding Group Company and Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Company will draw on their successful participation in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo to transform the China Shipbuilding Pavilion, the Jiangnan Machinery Manufacturing Bureau Translation Pavilion, and the original site No. 2 dock along with Yuanwang 1 into a three-in-one display platform, making the original site a cultural and artistic exposition sanctuary integrating contemporary shipbuilding and military industry, ships and oceans, and even aerospace and navigation. Open all year round from 09:00 to 17:00, it is one of the industrial tourist attractions (the original site is Jiangnan Shipyard No. 2 dock).
