The Yuewang Temple is located in the northwest corner of the West Lake, opposite to Quyuanfenghe. It is a place commemorating national hero Yue Fei. The tombs of Yue Fei and his son, and the four kneeling statues of traitors such as Qin Hui who have knelt for thousands of years in front of the tomb make people’s emotions surge. In addition, the exhibition hall also displays historical materials about Yue Fei’s life, so you can understand General Yue’s life of ‘serving the country loyally’. Entering the main entrance of the Yuewang Temple scenic area is a square courtyard. Straight ahead is the main building of the Yuewang Temple, the Zhonglie Shrine. The main hall is the hall where Yue Fei is enshrined. There is a four-character plaque ‘The Heart Shines on the Heavens’ hanging on the lintel, which is very solemn. Entering the main hall, facing you is a full-length statue of Yue Fei in military uniform. Hanging high above his head is his oath ‘Return my rivers and mountains’. The murals on the walls around the main hall describe Yue Fei’s life. Among them, the classic ‘Mother Yue Tattooing Characters’ is widely spread. On both sides of the main hall are enshrined two of Yue Fei’s generals, Niu Gao and Zhang Xian. After visiting the main hall and returning to the courtyard, walking west through the stele corridor and crossing the Jingzhong Bridge, you will come to the tomb area. Here, one large and one small are the tombs of Yue Fei and his son Yue Yun. Facing the Yue tomb is an arch. On both sides of the door are a pair of iron kneeling statues of traitors. They face the Yue Fei tomb and kneel to ask for forgiveness from Yue Fei. On the left is Qin Hui and his wife, Lady Wang. In the past, when people came here, in addition to paying respects to national heroes, another important thing was to spit in front of these two pairs of kneeling statues. Now, spitting is not allowed. There is also a slogan ‘Civilized sightseeing. Do not spit.’ hanging on the nearby wall. The entire Yuewang Temple is not large, but there are towering ancient trees. Not far from the tomb area, you can return to the main entrance of the Yue Temple. The entire tour takes about an hour. Opening hours: Open from 07:30 to 17:30 all year round.
