Yuhua Terrace is composed of three hills with a platform at the top. The entire scenic area is divided into the Martyrs’ Cemetery Area, Historical Sites Area, Yuhua Stone Cultural Area, Yuhua Tea Cultural Area, and Dense Forest Ecological Area.
Upon entering Yuhua Terrace from the North or South Gate, visitors arrive at the Martyrs’ Cemetery Area, which was once the site of martyrdom for martyrs of the New Democratic Revolution, with as many as 100,000 casualties. The square features the Loyal Soul Pavilion, Monument, and Martyr Sculptures. You will see the Ever-Burning Lamp under the monument, symbolizing the weight of the martyrs’ deaths, heavier than Mount Tai. By visiting the Martyr Memorial Hall, one can view various historical materials and cultural relics from the Great Revolution to the liberation of Nanjing.
In the Historical Sites Area, visitors can explore the famous ‘Second Spring of the South of the Yangtze’ (also known as Yuhua Spring), which has two springs with water emerging one meter above the ground. The poet Lu You once brewed tea with Yuhua Spring water, and today there is a century-old shop, ‘Erquan Tea House’, where visitors can enjoy tea if interested. The nearby Yuhua Pavilion houses a large mural depicting Yun Guang’s Dharma talk on ceramic tiles, narrating the history of Yuhua Terrace.
Yuhua Stone Cultural Area Yuhua Stone enthusiasts can visit the Yuhua Stone Cultural Area in the southern part of Donggang to explore the Yuhua Stone Museum, where they can appreciate the museum’s collection and learn about the origin, formation, history, and culture of Yuhua Stones; the Yuhua Stone Art Festival is held annually in September. Many tourists used to collect Yuhua Stones in the cultural area, but now it is mostly pebbles.
Yuhua Terrace is also a great place for flower viewing. From March to June, there is a large Rhododendron exhibition featuring Western Rhododendrons, wild azaleas, ground-planted Rhododendrons, and summer azaleas. During the Qingming Festival, Yuhua Terrace’s Donggang area is filled with blooming plum blossoms, hence the name Mei Gang. The winding Mei Corridor in the northeast, complemented by the plum blossoms, offers a pleasant plum viewing spot.
Opening Hours: Open Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00-17:00; Closed all day on Monday.
