The exhibition hall is the first to use a combination of miniature models, mechanical art, and digital multimedia to interactively interpret the history of a city. It includes seven major themed exhibition areas, over 500 miniature architectural landscapes, over 10,000 miniature figures, and more than 70 interactive experiences, humorously connecting the urban evolution of Shanghai from 1559 to 1937. The exhibition hall reveals a large sandbox of 6*13 meters, presenting the panorama of Yuyuan and the City God Temple market in a 1:30 scale, integrating a 4-minute holographic projection show to interpret the origin and changes of Yuyuan, and the bustling life of the City God Temple area with its ‘garden, temple, market’ characteristics.
‘Jianghai Confluence’ recreates the bustling commercial atmosphere of the Huangpu Riverbank and the Shiliupu Wharf. Displaying 13 types of sand boats and steamships, combined with sensory sound control and digital light and shadow, visitors can listen to the local dialects and feel the vastness of the river.
‘Battle at the North Gate’ recreates the scene of the Small Sword Society’s uprising forces resisting the joint attack of the Qing and French forces on January 6, 1855, and ultimately achieving victory after defending the Shanghai County for 16 months. Through the integration of new media sound, light, and electricity, visitors can step into the actual battle scene of that time.
In ‘Chinese Territory’, the first generation of industrial scientific and technological achievements are displayed. Various interactive amusements recreate historical scenes such as the old Shanghai South Station, which no longer exists after being bombed by the Japanese army, the first national electricity generation enterprise in Shanghai – Nanshi Electric Light Factory, and one of the earliest and largest professional beverage factories in China – Qinle Soda Factory.
‘Modern Times’ presents the important buildings and historical scenes of the Bund Historical and Cultural Area, Yuyuan Road Historical and Cultural Area, and Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Area through electronic sensing, mechanical dynamics, digital real-time interaction, and multimedia interpretation.
The special exhibits ‘Phantasmal Tales’ and ‘Imagine the Years’ are two special exhibitions tailored by Chinese Taiwan new media artist Lin Junting for ‘Four Hundred Years of Magic Capital’. ‘Phantasmal Tales’ uses the combination of light and shadow, the illusion of reality, and the misplacement of object proportions to let old objects tell the strange stories and life of Shanghai. ‘Imagine the Years’ restores a ‘dingding’ car, which is a tram. After boarding and ticketing, the kaleidoscopic visual spectacle in the car window takes you through the past and present of the Magic Capital.
Opening hours are 10:00-22:00 all year round.
