Yuwang Temple, located in Xishan Island, Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, at the northwestern part of Luo Li Village, Beizhengjing Port, and Lutouzhou, was built in memory of Yu the Great who managed the Taihu Lake water disaster. It is also known as Yu Temple or Shui Ping Wang Temple. Legend has it that Yu the Great gathered vassals at Yuqi Mountain on Xishan Island in Taihu Lake to discuss flood control plans. Once the ‘three rivers were diverted, the bottom of Zhen Ze was stabilized’, the water disaster of Taihu Lake was resolved, and Yu the Great was revered and beloved by the local people. To commemorate Yu, a temple was built at each cardinal direction on Xishan Island. Through historical changes, only this temple remains today. In 1986, Yuwang Temple was listed as a cultural relics protection unit in Wu County, and due to administrative adjustments, it is now a cultural relics protection unit in Suzhou City. The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
