Yuwang Temple, located in the northwest of Yao Lu Li Village, Bei Zhengjing Port, Luo Tou Zhou, West Mountain Island (today’s Jintan Town), Wu County, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was built in memory of the great Yu, who managed the water disasters of Lake Tai. It is also known as Yu Temple or Shui Ping Wang Temple. Legend has it that Yu convened various lords at Yuqi Mountain on West Mountain Island to discuss flood control strategies. Once the three rivers were harnessed and the lake stabilized, Yu was revered and beloved by the local people. In his honor, temples were built at the four cardinal directions of West Mountain Island. Through the vicissitudes of history, only this temple remains. In 1986, Yuwang Temple was listed as a cultural protection unit of Wu County and is now a cultural protection unit of Suzhou City due to administrative adjustments. It is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
