Zhang Garden is located at the southern end of Taixing Road, to the south of West Nanjing Road and to the west of Shimen First Road. Originally, the site was farmland, constructed as a garden in 1878 by British merchant Grong. On August 16, 1882, Chinese merchant Zhang Shuhe purchased the garden from the Hui Ji Foreign Firm, covering an area of 21 acres, and named it “Zhang’s Garden of Taste and Fragrance,” also known as Zhang’s Family Garden. Zhang Shuhe subsequently made several renovations to the garden. By 1894, the garden’s area expanded to 61.52 acres, stretching from the present West Nanjing Road (Taixing Road intersection) in the north, to Weihai Road in the south, Shimen First Road in the east, and extending to Maoming North Road in the west. The garden is open all year round from 10:00 to 22:00.
