Zhangshan Grand Canyon, also known as the Valley of Great Men, is a place steeped in history and natural beauty. Located 22 kilometers east of Jixi County, it is believed that Emperor Xuanyuan Huangdi once collected medicinal herbs and refined elixirs here with Rongchengzi and Fuqiu Gong. Today, relics such as the Emperor’s Tomb and the Prime Minister’s Tomb can still be found within the mountain, earning Zhangshan its ancient title as the Capital of Three Emperors and the Mountain of Three Kings. During the Spring and Autumn period, the Wu and Yue states considered this mountain as their border.
The scenic area of Zhangshan Grand Canyon is a haven for nature lovers. Streams accompany the canyon throughout, providing opportunities for water play and exploration. Visitors can marvel at the various peculiar rocks and enjoy the rich variety of vegetation, making it a natural oxygen bar. The only footpath in Zhangshan Grand Canyon can be walked to the end and then returned the same way, or one can opt for a sightseeing bus at the entrance of the scenic area for a one-way trip costing 5 yuan. The bus travels on the highway, offering fewer scenic spots compared to the footpath, which is where all the attractions are located. For a more relaxed experience, it is recommended to take the sightseeing bus up the mountain and then walk down along the footpath.
The canyon resonates with the sound of flowing water, and from the entrance to the depths, the four ‘Four Wonders’ scenic spots are the Great Man Stone, Flower on the Crown, Hundred-Zhang Rock, and Gourd Pond. Among these, the Flower on the Crown is a peculiar pine tree that has grown on the top of a rock for over four hundred years, adding to the area’s mystique and charm.Hundred-Zhang Rock is a 460-meter-tall single giant rock, resembling a huge bell covering the ground, with a nearly vertical and smooth as a mirror rock surface. Gourd Pond is a gourd-shaped pond located deep within the scenic area, with a waiting room nearby, which is the terminal point of the sightseeing bus.
The Hui-style village Longchuan, Tai Chi Lake Village, and Zhangshan Grand Canyon are all on the same line, all located to the east of Jixi County. Starting from Jixi, one can visit Longchuan first, then Tai Chi Lake Village, and finally Zhangshan Grand Canyon for a combined tour.
