Zhanqiao, located in the southern coastal area of Qingdao’s central urban district, is a 440-meter long maritime promenade extending from the land into the sea. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in 1892, Zhanqiao has a century-old history and has always been considered a symbol of Qingdao. At the end of Zhanqiao stands the Huilange Pavilion, a testament to Qingdao’s modern history. Once a military-exclusive artificial dock for Qingdao, Zhanqiao faces Xiaoqingdao across the water.
Its northern end is connected in a straight line to Zhongshan Road Commercial Street. A triangular wave-breaking dike is built at the end of Zhanqiao, where the Huilange Pavilion with a national style octagonal pavilion stands. Inside Huilange Pavilion, there is a stele without any inscriptions, the origin of which remains a subject of debate. Now, the pavilion showcases Qingdao’s modern history, culture, and unique urban characteristics through thematic exhibitions. Iron chain railings and lotus lampposts line both sides of Zhanqiao. Visitors strolling along the Zhanqiao seaside can watch seagulls soaring freely in calm weather. At the end of the bridge, one can also gaze at Xiaoqingdao. The island, with its swaying trees and clusters of green shade, is home to a white lighthouse standing tall. During high tide, waves crash against the wave-breaking dike, creating clusters of spray that can be observed from a distance. At low tide, reddish-brown reefs and golden beaches are revealed, allowing one to walk down from Zhanqiao and stroll along the beach to collect shells. Qingdao Railway Station is not far away, and it takes only 10 minutes to walk to Zhanqiao. As you disembark from the train and leave the station hall, you can see Zhanqiao stretching into the sea. On both sides of the northern end of Zhanqiao are Zhanqiao Park. To the east, red tiles and green trees complement each other, with various buildings scattered along the seaside. To the west of Zhanqiao is the Sixth Bathing Beach, which is often crowded with local swimmers during the peak summer season. Operating hours: Open all year round, 24/7. Essential tips: 1. Zhanqiao is crowded with tourists, especially during holidays. Be cautious while walking along Zhanqiao and keep your belongings secure. 2. Huilange Pavilion is currently only open to the first floor, with a maximum instantaneous capacity of 40 visitors. Visitors enter and exit in a continuous cycle. To tour Huilange Pavilion, you can get a Huilange Pavilion tour card at the entrance, which is required for entry.Zhanqiao: A Symbol of Qingdao’s History
