The Zhejiang Museum is comprised of two venues, the Gushan Branch and the Wulin Branch. The historic Gushan Branch is situated at the southern foot of Gushan, consisting of the main building, Zhejiang West Lake Art Museum, and the Wenlan Pavilion, a former imperial library. It primarily displays artifacts from the Hemudu culture, such as pottery and lacquerware, Liangzhu culture jade and silk textiles, bronze ware from the Yue state, and works of Zhejiang painters and calligraphers from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The main building has three floors, housing various exhibition halls including the Ceramics Hall, Celadon Hall, and Lacquerware Hall. The first floor mainly exhibits pottery, while the second and third floors showcase porcelain, with the second floor featuring Yue ware and Longquan ware, and the third floor displaying porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties and later periods. The Zhejiang West Lake Art Museum, located to the east of the Gushan Branch, primarily displays calligraphy and painting works, along with two special exhibition halls: the Huang Binhong Calligraphy and Painting Hall and Lv Xiaguang Art Museum, both open for visits. Additionally, the museum’s main building and West Lake Art Museum hold various temporary exhibitions throughout the year. To the west of the museum lies the Wenlan Pavilion, one of the seven pavilions that once housed the Siku Quanshu during the Qing dynasty. Although the original collection is no longer present, the pavilion still retains the bookcases from that era, along with samples of the Siku Quanshu and the process of recollecting the texts after their destruction in war. The Wenlan Pavilion’s scenery is worth admiring, as it is a quintessential Jiangnan courtyard architecture. Nearby, the Xiling Seal Society is recommended for visitors with an interest in humanities. The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed on Mondays. On New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, the museum is open 09:00-17:00, closed on Mondays, and opens as usual on statutory holidays, with closures postponed to the first day after the holiday. A must-see tip is that one of the Zhejiang Museum’s treasures, the ‘Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains · Remaining Mountain Scroll,’ is housed in the Wulin Branch, but it is usually not on display; replicas are available for viewing.Zhejiang Museum, Gushan Branch
