The rear plaque of the arch bears the inscription ‘Zhenfeng Zeguo,’ which was written by Shen Peng, the former chairman of the Calligraphy Association. Zhouzhuang was originally named Zhenfengli. It wasn’t until 1086 that a minor official with the surname Zhou donated land to build a temple. The local people, grateful for his kindness, renamed the place Zhouzhuang. The entire village of Zhouzhuang resembles a small island, surrounded by water on all sides, hence it is also called ‘Zeguo.’ It is open all year round, with access available 24 hours a day.
