Zheng’s Seventeen Houses is located in Xiepu Town, featuring a large and well-preserved complex of Ming and Qing dynasty ancient buildings. It was the residence of the local tycoon Zheng’s family. One of them was Zheng Zunfa, the founder of the Hero Ink Factory. The complex is characterized by houses with streets and markets within, towering horse-head walls, and a distinctive flavor. This location has gained some fame for being the setting of the TV drama ‘Zheng’s Seventeen Houses’. After being renovated into Kaiyuan Resort in 2013, the admission fee for Zheng’s Seventeen Houses is now only one-third of the original price. However, some old houses have been converted into resort guest rooms, reducing the number of scenic spots available for viewing. Currently, half of the area is open to tourists as a scenic area, and the other half is reserved for guests for accommodation and dining, with guests having free access to the scenic area upon presentation of their credentials. The scenic area is divided into two sections by a waterway, which can be quickly toured on foot without entering the rooms. The first place to visit in the scenic area is the Zheng family’s ancestral hall. Further in, one can see the old kitchen, which has been deliberately left unrestored. The exposed stone bases, stoves, and some ruins, along with the overgrown weeds on the walls, create a visually striking scene. Crossing the bridge leads to the Ming and Qing Street, which retains many props used during filming, including creative tables and chairs. The streets and houses in this area exude the charm of the Ming and Qing dynasties, especially suitable for photography on good weather days. Some houses have been transformed into restaurants and exhibition halls, and the history of many famous houses can be learned through the plaques on the walls. Walking to the Yuanmao House marks the beginning of the accommodation area. Crossing the bridge to the scenic area’s entrance concludes the tour. Opening hours are from 08:30 to 16:30 all year round.
