Zhenru Temple is located in Zhenru Town in the northwest corner of Shanghai urban area. It is an ancient temple built in the Yuan Dynasty. The temples with white walls and black tiles are full of ancient charm everywhere. The incense has been prosperous for hundreds of years. Compared with other famous temples in Shanghai such as Longhua Temple, Zhenru Temple is more peaceful and the solemn sense of Buddhism is even stronger. For pilgrims who like tranquility, this is a place for praying that is quiet in the midst of chaos and still retains ancient charm. Zhenru Temple is not large. The layout of the entire temple is regular. The more prominent building is a fifty-meter-high nine-story square tower imitating the Song and Yuan styles. There are also archways, mountain gates, incense burners and incense ponds, bell and drum towers, Buddha halls, Bodhisattva halls, Buddhist halls, scripture rooms, libraries, monk dormitories and dining rooms and other buildings. Entering the gate are the bell and drum towers. The Buddha hall and the promenade are arranged in sequence. Stepping into the main hall and touching the beams and columns as historical sites of the Yuan Dynasty, it seems as if one has returned to a thousand years ago. The environment inside the temple is quiet and elegant. The flowers and plants are planted like a small garden. There are koi fish in the release pond. You can buy a bag of fish food to feed them. Even sitting and resting in the adjacent promenade feels good. Climbing the tower can overlook the panoramic view of the temple. There are some Buddha statues enshrined in the tower, and there are also many exquisite wood carvings for viewing. Due to years of weathering, the Zhenru Temple we see now is the appearance after many repairs and expansions. However, according to research, the main hall is a building of the Yuan Dynasty. The main structure including the existing beams, columns, square beams, and brackets inside and most of the components are original objects of the Yuan Dynasty. It is one of the very few Yuan Dynasty buildings preserved in Buddhist temples in China.
