Zhǐ Cǐ Zhōuzhuāng: An Immersive Multidimensional Space Drama is designed to immerse the audience in a journey of ‘encountering oneself’ through a dream within a dream. The play breaks the mold of traditional theater and stage performances, exploring spatial and temporal issues through deconstruction and reconstruction. It blends Song Dynasty aesthetics with multidimensional technological creativity, leading the audience to transcend the three-dimensional space and time, thus obtaining a super sensory experience of emotion and spirit. The story revolves around a young traveler named Zhou He, who comes to Zhouzhuang for an astronomy enthusiasts’ gathering and witnesses the dreams and life of a Song Dynasty person with the same name in Zhouzhuang nine hundred years ago, engaging in dialogues across time with many famous figures of Zhouzhuang. In 70 minutes, enter the dreams of contemporary Zhou He and Song Dynasty Zhou He, following the four chapters of ‘Old Dreams, Entering the Painting, Setting Out, and Seeking the Way,’ to step into the world of Song Dynasty aesthetics and the ancient water town of nine hundred years ago, witnessing the pursuits of Zhouzhuang’s old friends. Old Dreams: Welcome to Zhouzhuang! At an offline gathering for astronomy enthusiasts, you meet a young man named Zhou He, who casually picks up a copy of ‘Zhouzhuang Town Chronicles’ at the front desk to read before sleep. That night, all the hotel guests magically enter the same dream, entering Zhou He’s dream. The sound of rain outside the window is gradually fading, and Zhou He, pillowing a book, dreams back to the water town of nine hundred years ago, meeting a Song Dynasty person with the same name. Come, let’s dream together. Highlight: An all-encompassing immersive drama performance in a dome-shaped space with light and shadow, bringing you a shocking visual enjoyment. Entering the Painting: Within the dream, you follow Zhou He’s steps with a lantern, entering the dream of the Song Dynasty person with the same name. The dream is filled with memories, the former prosperity of feasts in Tokyo, the acquaintance and separation with the court singer Tao Xi, and the promises and entrustments of people. At the moment of waking up, Song Dynasty Zhou He has an answer between staying and leaving, ‘There are beautiful scenery outside the Jiangnan water town, why does Brother Zhou stay here alone?’ Only because ‘This is where my heart is at peace, this is my hometown.’ Highlight: The scene restores the twelve cases of drum blowing and court music, and the Song Dynasty court dancers dance gracefully under the light and shadow, showing the prosperous court scene. Setting Out: The modern Zhou He walks in the fragments of time, witnessing the half-life story of Song Dynasty Zhou He staying in Zhouzhuang. To protect the water town, he sends his son Zhou Xi into the military. In a drunken state, he picks up the sword under the lamplight, and dreams back to the continuous horn sound of the camp. Zhou Xi is brave and good at fighting, leading three hundred strong men from Zhouzhuang to join the northward resistance against the Jins. Highlight: Riding a ‘warship,’ you are in the midst of a fierce battle against the Jins, feeling the war atmosphere of wind and rain, lightning and thunder, and the firing of cannons. Seeking the Way: The ginkgo tree planted by the elders of Zhouzhuang to commemorate the resistance soldiers against the Jins has become a divine tree for the people of the water town to pray for blessings. In the dream, time and space weaken, and the modern Zhou He takes over the guiding fish lamp, waiting under the ginkgo tree.
Zhang Han, Zhou Digonglang, Shen Wansan… The figures of Zhouzhuang’s past enter our dreams, narrating the sentiments of ‘Zhizhi Zhouzhuang’. As dawn breaks, we all awaken from our own dreams, savoring the ‘lucid dream’ we shared with one another. May all the estrangement in reality at least meet and embrace in dreams. Highlight: Hundreds of prayer lotus lamps adorn the sacred tree, illuminating the lost and guiding them through a dreamlike journey.
