Zhi Zhi Pagoda Courtyard, also known as Zhenjue Temple and commonly referred to as Tatou Temple, is located on the north of the county at Jindi Ridge (Fulong Mountain). It is the initial practice site of the founder of Chinese Buddhism’s Tiantai Sect, Master Zhi Zhi (538-597 AD). The temple was first established in the 17th year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (597 AD), and the existing buildings were rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty.
Inside the courtyard, there is a stone pagoda, the Zhi Zhi Master’s physical body pagoda, standing 7 meters tall with elegant and exquisite carvings. On the first level, the statue of Master Zhi Zhi sits in the niche, looking very lifelike. Each level is carved with railings, beams, columns, and brackets, and the entire pagoda is adorned with delicate relief sculptures. According to ‘The Complete Records of Tiantai Mountain’, Master Zhi Zhi was buried here after his death. As the pagoda contains the true body of the master, religious figures from Japan, Korea, and other Southeast Asian countries who come to worship at the Guoqing Temple in Tiantai Mountain must visit this site. On the left side of the pagoda courtyard, there is an ancient path leading to the tombs of three eminent monks of the Tiantai Sect: Zhang’an, Jingxi, and Youxi. In the vicinity, there are also cliff inscriptions such as ‘Samantabhadra Realm’, ‘Source of Teaching’, and ‘Fulong’. A mile east of Zhi Zhi Pagoda Courtyard, there is another site donated and inscribed by Master Hai Deng, known as ‘Master Zhi Zhi’s Dharma Lecture Site’, where it is said that Master Zhi Zhi once lectured on the Dharma.
