During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tai’erzhuang was known for its convenient water and land transportation and prosperous markets. From the reign of Emperor Qianlong to Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, over a span of more than 100 years, Tai’erzhuang was home to seven traditional Chinese medicine pharmacies, including Weishengtang, Renshoutang, Rongshoutang, Baoshoutang, Taishan Tang, Yisheng Tang, and Zhonghetang, which primarily dealt in the sale of traditional Chinese medicine and also provided medical services. Among them, Zhonghetang Pharmacy enjoyed a prestigious reputation.
Located on the southern end of the bustling Dingzi Street to the east, Zhonghetang was unfortunately not spared during the Battle of Tai’erzhuang, and it was destroyed by the war. To this day, one can still see the scars of war, such as bullet holes, on its walls. Although Zhonghetang was later restored and reopened, it chose a different location. The original site has been preserved as a memorial to those bygone years. The opening hours and business status are subject to the day’s operations.
