Zhonghua Filial Piety Garden faces Taihu Lake and is backed by Liao E Mountain. It integrates the culture of filial piety and Guanyin. Here, one can visit the Liao E Zen Temple, which was built in memory of Wang Piao, one of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars. There is also a towering Guanyin statue. The garden’s architecture is modern and the surrounding environment has a rural charm. However, its remote location makes it more suitable for self-driving tours.
The main entrance of Zhonghua Filial Piety Garden is located by Taihu Lake. Its layout is similar to that of Lingshan Scenic Area in Wuxi. Upon entering, one first encounters the Gratitude Square. This square is situated amidst a lake and has a 12-meter-tall pure white vase at its center. There are periodic fountain performances. After that, there is a fork in the road. The right path leads to the Ancestral Hall and the left path leads to the Bodhi Avenue, which leads to the Guanyin Sacred Land. Inside the Ancestral Hall, deities such as the Yellow Emperor and the Empress, Fuxi and Nuwa are enshrined. The Eastern and Western halls serve as genealogy culture museums. The 105 rooms on either side are dedicated to the ancestral halls of various surnames.
On the way to the Guanyin Sacred Land, there is another fork in the road that leads to Liao E Zen Temple. Originally constructed during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt over the ages. An ancient well and stone column carvings from the Ming Dynasty still stand. The temple’s yellow walls and black tiles are surrounded by lush greenery, creating a tranquil atmosphere. After visiting Liao E Zen Temple, one returns to Bodhi Avenue and continues on to the Guanyin Sacred Land’s mountain gate. The subsequent areas are all Guanyin-related. The Zhengfa Ming Great Hall houses the Zhengfa Ming Tathagata (the previous life of Guanyin Bodhisattva) and the Twelve Perfectly Enlightened Bodhisattvas. Climbing a slope along the stone steps leads to the main attraction of the Guanyin Sacred Land, the Jiangnan Grottoes. Three artificially excavated grottoes each contain a golden statue—Guanyin Bodhisattva in the center, flanked by Sudhana Kumara and the Dragon Girl.
After touring Zhonghua Filial Piety Garden, one can take a leisurely walk by Taihu Lake to enjoy the breeze and watch the sunset over the lake. Additionally, there are dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of the Hu Taihu Lake Road outside the entrance. Self-driving tourists who bring bicycles can ride for a while here, which is also enjoyable.
