The Zhongjiang Tower stands majestically on the river embankment at the confluence of the Qingyi River and the Yangtze River. Half by the bustling city and half by the river, it was praised by the ancients as ‘hibiscus on the river’. The Zhongjiang Tower was first built in 1618 (the 46th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty) and was completed after continuous construction in 1669 (the eighth year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty).
It is a pavilion-style brick-wood structure feng shui pagoda with eight corners and five floors, each side being 4.1 meters long. The tower is 43.7 meters high, of which the tower spire is 10.16 meters high. There are four windows on each floor, staggered and spaced. There is a lamp niche on the left and right of each window. The internal structure of the tower is of the wall-climbing type on the first and second floors, with stone stairs winding around. The third to fifth floors are of the hollow cylinder type, with wooden stairs attached to the wall. The doors, windows and tower walls are exquisitely carved. The sides of the wall are all inlaid with brick carvings, especially the brick carvings on both sides of the circular inclined columns on the first and second floors are more prominent. In 1987, after maintenance organized by the provincial archaeological research institute, the cornice part of the tower was restored. The eight corners are supported by corner brackets to extend the old rafters outward, with a long cornice. The eight sides are supported by two brackets to support the eaves purlins to protrude. Rafters and flying rafters are nailed with look-out boards and covered with mandarin duck tiles. After renovation, the Zhongjiang Tower is majestic and magnificent. Standing on the top of the tower, one can have a panoramic view of countless scenes. The Zhongjiang Tower can be regarded as a landmark of Wuhu’s geographical location. The Zhongjiang Tower overlooks the two rivers. Its shadow is reflected in the two waters. In the morning glow and evening sunset, the tower shadow is long. It is reflected in the mighty Yangtze River in the morning and moves to the clear Qingyi River in the evening. The waves and tower shadows are extremely beautiful. At night, the moonlight is bright and there are dots of fishing fires. As the moon rises, the shadow moves. The waves sway and the shadow shakes. Accompanied by the sound of waves, it is even more intoxicating and leisurely. Open all year round and open all day.Zhongjiang Tower
