Located on the north bank of the ancient Grand Canal in the urban area, the Chen Family Garden, in the autumn of 1904, Zhou Enlai moved to Qingjiangpu (today’s Huai’an City) with his parents and adoptive mother to live in the Wan Mansion of his maternal grandfather, where he continued his studies at the family’s private school. The extensive collection of books left behind by his grandfather became a treasure trove of knowledge for his childhood. In September 1905, due to the unsatisfactory operation of the Wan Mansion’s private school, he moved to the Chen Family Garden south of the Wan Mansion with his adoptive mother and biological mother. His adoptive mother invited a tutor to establish a private school at home. There were a total of four students: him, his younger brother, and his two younger sisters. Here, he successively read many ancient and famous books such as ‘The Four Books’, ‘The Five Classics’, ‘Journey to the West’, ‘Water Margin’, ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’, ‘The Complete Biography of Yue Fei’, ‘The Mirror Flower Water Moon’, and so on. In the spring of 1907, his biological mother (Wan) passed away, and the family school was closed due to financial difficulties. He returned to his hometown in Huai’an to live in the Fu Ma Lane with his younger brother. Open all year round, Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-16:30.
