Established in 1903, Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office is the preserved site of the Daqing Post Office in the East China region and the earliest postal institution in this area. It is said that there were thirteen postal stations in Shanghai at that time, and Zhujiajiao Post Office was one of them. After the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the Daqing Post Office was transformed into the Chinese Post and continued its business. In 1953, it relocated to the vicinity of the Fangsheng Bridge on Beidajie Street, and in 2001, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Qingpu District.
The replica of a Qing Dynasty bronze dragon mailbox standing outside the former site of the post office is a unique business card of Zhujiajiao, highlighting the retro romance of ‘slow carriages and horses, long letters’. In 2022, the Zhujiajiao Daqing Post Office underwent a comprehensive spatial upgrade of its entire building. Through the restoration of its original appearance, it has been revitalized, retaining the original architectural style and cultural heritage of the Ming and Qing Dynasties while integrating new Chinese aesthetics. It combines cultural exchanges, cultural and creative experiences, art exhibitions, research seminars, and boat tours to reproduce the century-old vicissitudes of the ancient town’s post station and showcase the long history of the Chinese Post.
In addition to the historical attributes of the ancient architectural site itself, it has also developed more themed coffee shops, cultural exhibitions, characteristic cultural and creative products, creative workshops, and art summer camps to continue to promote the depth of history and the vitality of modern national trend culture in this building that has witnessed the passage of time. The opening hours are all year round: Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00; Saturday and Sunday from 09:30 to 18:30.
