Established in 1903, the Zhujiajiao Qing Dynasty Post Office is one of the preserved Qing Dynasty post office sites in the East China region and the earliest postal institution in this area. It is said that there were thirteen post stations in Shanghai at that time, and Zhujiajiao Post Office was one of them. After the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty Post Office transitioned into the China Post to continue its operations. In 1953, the post office relocated to the vicinity of the Fangsheng Bridge on Beidajie, and in 2001, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Qingpu District.
Outside the former site of the post office stands a unique imitation Qing Dynasty bronze dragon mailbox, which has become a distinctive calling card of Zhujiajiao, highlighting the retro romance of ‘slow carriages and long letters’. In 2022, the entire Zhujiajiao Qing Dynasty Post Office underwent a comprehensive spatial upgrade, revitalizing through a renovation that preserved its historical charm while retaining the original architectural style and cultural essence of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It also integrated new Chinese aesthetics, blending cultural exchanges, cultural and creative experiences, art exhibitions, research salons, and boat tours into a multifaceted cultural experience, recreating the century-old vicissitudes of the ancient town’s post station and showcasing the long history of China Post.
Beyond the historical significance of the ancient architectural site itself, more themed cafes, cultural exhibitions, specialty cultural and creative products, creative workshops, and art summer camps have been developed as cultural exchange spaces. This building, which has witnessed the passage of time, will continue to showcase the depth of history and the vitality of modern national tide culture. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00; Saturday and Sunday from 09:30 to 18:30 throughout the year.
