Zicheng is located on Fuzheng Street in the heart of Jiaxing city, and it has historically been the seat of governance for successive administrations and the former site of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s Listening Prince’s Mansion. Constructed in the year 231 during the Three Kingdoms period of the Wu Kingdom, Zicheng has a history of over 1,700 years. The circumference of Zicheng is two li and ten steps, with a height and thickness of one zhang and two chi, covering an area of 75,000 square meters.

At the end of the Tang Dynasty, due to the construction of Luocheng outside Zicheng, the original city was renamed Zicheng (another theory suggests that the city was surrounded by catalpa trees and was initially called Zicheng, which was later corrupted to Zicheng). The existing Zicheng and the watchtower were rebuilt in 1990, stretching approximately a hundred meters long, with brick and stone walls.

The city is equipped with battlements and a city gate made of wood, guarded by stone lions at the entrance. From the top of the city, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the cityscape of Hecheng and the misty scenery of Nanhu Lake. Opening hours during the summer season are from 6:00 to 20:30; the specific business status is subject to the day’s opening conditions.
