The Drunken Garden was initially built in the Ming Dynasty. Originally, there were five courtyards. It was the side hall of the residence on Tawan Street of the Wang family, a prominent clan in Xitang. Currently, there are four courtyards. There are ancient brick flower beds and a rare miniature brick arch bridge in the south of the Yangtze River. The ancient brick flower bed in the courtyard was built together with the house and has a history of nearly 300 years. The ‘Drunken Goose Bridge’ in the large courtyard on the south side is so narrow that only one person can pass through. It is a miniature brick arch bridge in the south of the Yangtze River. The Drunken Garden gets its name from the ‘Drunken Scripture Hall’ of the Wang family residence. The ‘scripture’ in ‘Drunken Scripture Hall’ means reading. It was built by Wang Guangxi in the Qing Dynasty. Wang was a calligrapher and painter during the Qianlong period. His handwriting still remains in the garden. Therefore, this can be said to be a family of scholars. Now, in the main hall of the garden, ‘Yixiang Studio’ has an exhibition series of woodblock prints of ‘Water Town Charm’ by father and son Wang Heng and Wang Xiaozheng. They all depict the scenery of Xitang and can be said to be the epitome of the beautiful scenery of the ancient town. The woodblock prints here can be appreciated and purchased. The prices are very reasonable. The Drunken Garden covers an area of more than 200 square meters. The courtyard and houses are well preserved. It is a unique courtyard that is small but complete in all respects. The halls, corridors, green ponds, bluestones, green bamboos, red carps in the garden are extremely charming. In an extremely small space, the charm of Jiangnan courtyard architecture is vividly displayed.
