As the premier tragedy of William Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, ‘Hamlet’ was created between 1599 and 1602. With complex character personalities and rich and perfect tragic artistic techniques, it represents the highest achievement of Western literature during the Renaissance.

The prince Hamlet’s father dies suddenly. His mother remarries his uncle a month later and the new king ascends the throne. Hamlet sees his father’s ghost at night, crying out that he was poisoned by his younger brother and pleading with Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet feigns madness but loses himself in the process of implementing revenge. The world has become a filthy quagmire for him. The desire and awakening of sexuality have become a terrifying abyss. Friends have become the eyes and ears of his stepfather. Even his lover Ophelia has become a pawn in a conspiracy. Hamlet mistakenly kills Ophelia’s father, Polonius, who is eavesdropping behind the curtain. His mother and stepfather cover up the murder for him and arrange for him to go far away. Unable to bear all this, Ophelia commits suicide. When the king finally decides to get rid of Hamlet, Hamlet also seizes the opportunity and delivers a final blow to his stepfather.

Shakespeare reproduces the degenerate political ecology of the Danish royal family. Murder, betrayal, usurpation of power and the desire for sexuality have become weapons to defend imperial power, and Hamlet’s life has also become a completely psychedelic tragedy.

Audience comments on ‘Hamlet’: ‘It was not until tonight that I understood the excellence of Shakespeare. The actors are extremely outstanding. I had the feeling of being in the Globe Theatre a hundred years ago.’ ‘Authentic British drama. Shakespeare’s hometown. The taste of poetry. Hearing such poetic lines with such timbre in such a silent space, the happiness of life is indescribable! The most astonishing thing is the music of this play, which has indescribable beauty. Almost every character has served as a singer, guitarist, and drummer. It creates an atmosphere and sets off the plot. In a trance, there is a feeling of glimpsing a corner of a small British town in the sixteenth century. A rural feeling. The most impressive is the singing of the actor playing Ophelia. Pure and clean, like the sounds of nature.’

The ‘Suzhou Daily’ said: ‘Under the minimalist stage design, the actors’ super acting strength and lines skills attract the audience’s attention to Shakespeare’s most authentic and magnificent dramatic lines. This is the most original charm of drama after washing away all the glitz.’

English dialogue with Chinese subtitles. Performed by the British TNT Theatre. Pure British style. An original Shakespearean world.
TNT Theatre’s Shakespeare series has been performed thousands of times in over 20 countries worldwide. According to Artistic Director Paul Stebbing, Shakespeare’s works are an immensely deep and rich theatrical treasure, with beautiful poetry, profound themes, and deeply etched characters. We often feel he is with us because there are many similarities between our theatre and that of Shakespeare’s time, such as versatile actors playing multiple roles, gender swapping of actors and characters, and live music. Our performances will inspire the audience’s boundless imagination.

Character Relationships in Hamlet:

Prince Hamlet — the Prince of Denmark, haunted by the ghost of his father, seeks revenge on his father’s murderer. After enduring painful struggles, he achieves his goal, plunging the entire royal palace into the horror of death, and ultimately dying from a fatal poisoned sword.

Claudius — the current King of Denmark and Hamlet’s uncle, who ascended to the throne after his brother’s death. The ghost of the old king reveals to Hamlet that he is the murderer. He meets his deserved end, dying from the poisoned sword of his nephew’s revenge.

King Hamlet (Ghost) — the ghost of Hamlet’s father, who was poisoned by his brother while Hamlet was abroad.

Gertrude — the Queen of Denmark and Prince Hamlet’s biological mother. After the old king’s death, she remarried Claudius, which was seen as incest in Shakespeare’s time, thus inciting Hamlet’s hatred. She inadvertently drinks the poisoned wine prepared by Claudius and dies on the spot.

Polonius — the Lord Chamberlain to King Claudius, known for his stubbornness, he thwarts the love between Hamlet and Ophelia. Hamlet often feigns foolishness to mock him. While hiding behind a tapestry, eavesdropping on a conversation between Hamlet and the queen, he is stabbed to death by the prince.

Laertes — Polonius’s son, who kills Hamlet with a sword in revenge for his father and sister. He also dies from Hamlet’s poisoned sword, although Hamlet was unaware of the poison at the time.

Ophelia — Polonius’s daughter. She and Hamlet fall in love, but various obstacles warn the prince that their political status makes a union impossible. As part of Hamlet’s疯狂的 revenge plan, she is callously abandoned by him, and the death of her father drives her to madness, leading to her eventual drowning.

Horatio – Hamlet’s close friend from university. He is not directly involved in the royal conspiracy, so he becomes Hamlet’s mouthpiece. Shakespeare uses him to enhance the plot. He is also the only major character who survives until the end of the play, although he once threatened to commit suicide.

Regarding the British TNT Theatre, audiences say: ‘The pure simplicity of drama. There is no gorgeous lighting rendering and no elaborate stage design. The focus is on drama itself. The life of the characters is entirely entrusted to the actors. The director’s consciousness is hidden behind the stage! A heavy sword without a sharp edge!’

‘The whole play reveals an extremely delicate soul of dramatic creation under a simple appearance. Very rare!’

The theatre was founded in the UK in 1980. TNT is both an abbreviation for English dynamite and for New Theatre. It is dedicated to integrating various performing arts forms and becoming a new explosive theatre. It takes various theatrical elements as the performance foundation, including traditional British drama, physical theatre of Eastern European masters Grotowski and Meyerhold, and Italian commedia dell’arte. TNT’s dramas have strong musical characteristics. All works are commissioned with brand new music compositions. The selection of actors also values their comprehensive ability to handle drama, music, and dance. Just like in Shakespeare’s time, one actor playing multiple roles and cross-gender casting are also distinct characteristics of TNT.

TNT is not only renowned in the UK, but also the English theatre troupe that tours the most countries and has the most performances globally. The countries and regions where it tours all year round include the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Malta, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Bahrain, Iran, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, the United States, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Chile – it almost occupies the entire English drama market in Germany and is also the English theatre troupe that performs the most in France, Japan, Russia, and the Americas. In recognition of TNT Theatre’s contribution to British culture, in 2014, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Paul Stebbings, the artistic director of TNT Theatre, the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

The producer of ‘Hamlet’, Grant Marshall, is a descendant of Shakespeare’s ninth generation. He believes that drama has no boundaries. Any novel and literary work can be adapted into a drama, and a drama can be performed anywhere in the world. In 1978, he founded the American European Drama Group (ADG) in Munich. In 1993, he began to cooperate with the British TNT Theatre and created a series of Shakespeare’s plays. In chronological order, these works are ‘Macbeth’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Hamlet’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘King Lear’, and ‘The Taming of the Shrew’.
Thanks to the efforts of Marshall Grant, TNT Theatre’s Shakespearean tour began in the UK and Germany, expanding its reach to the south of France, the Norwegian Arctic, East Asia, and South America. The continuous refinement of the script, the redesign of costumes, and different casts give each tour a distinct character. In 2014, Prince Charles, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, awarded Paul Stebbing, TNT’s Artistic Director, with a medal.
