Tianjin Grand Theatre is about to welcome a grand cultural feast on September 16th – the Tianjin Bank · 2024 Tianjin Theatre Festival. During the festival, 84 works and approximately 340 performances will be staged in various theatres across Tianjin. The main activities of this year’s festival will take place from September to December, focusing on three major sections: ‘Play Performances’, ‘Everywhere Immersion – Theatre City National Day Activities’, and the ‘Second Tianjin University Students’ Theatre Festival’, allowing audiences to experience the charm and style of theatrical art from all aspects and perspectives.

This year’s festival showcases three highlights in the performance of plays: the vigorous enhancement of original forces, the display of the style of municipal state-owned troupes, and the exciting introduction of excellent plays from across the country and the world. Original forces shine on stage. Original plays such as ‘The Grand Hotel’ and ‘Rushing to the Camp’, which revolve around the legendary history of the Astor Hotel in Tianjin and the Yangliuqing Camp, are rich in Tianjin characteristics.

The first XR (Extended Reality) digital music children’s play ‘Dunhuang · Nine-Colored Deer King’ created by Tianjin demonstrates the cutting-edge achievements of theatre development. New works such as the play ‘Red Chamber Eunuchs’, picture book play ‘I Dare to Sleep Alone’, and the original science fiction comedy ‘Life is Explosive’ from the Tianjin Northern Performing Arts Group’s ‘Feng Fei Takeoff’ plan will also appear at the festival.

State-owned troupes are innovative while preserving traditions. Local masterpieces such as ‘The Rouge Treasure Fold’ by Tianjin Peking Opera House, ‘Yutang Spring’ by Tianjin Youth Peking Opera Troupe, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ by Tianjin Song and Dance Theatre Ballet Troupe, ‘A Doll’s House’ by Tianjin People’s Art, ‘Journey to the West: The Three Strikes against White Bone Spirit’ by Tianjin Children’s Art, ‘Bao Long Mountain’ by Tianjin Pingju Theatre, ‘Meng Mu’ by Tianjin Ping Opera Baipai Troupe, ‘Su Wu’ by Tianjin Hebei Bangzi Theatre, ‘Haihe Old Shadows’ by Tianjin Quyi Troupe, and ‘Beautiful Era’ by Tianjin Acrobatic Troupe will meet the audience.

Imported plays embrace the diversity. This year’s festival has introduced signature plays from well-known national performing groups such as Beijing People’s Art, Shaanxi People’s Art, Yunnan Province Song and Dance Theatre, and Drama Nine, including ‘The World of Human Life’, ‘Ordinary World’, ‘Peacock’, and ‘Four Zhangji’. There will also be performances of internationally renowned classic works such as the original English play ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Hamlet’, the original French musical ‘Mozart Rock’, the classic musical ‘Cats’, and the ballet ‘Swan Lake’.

In this year’s festival, the Second Tianjin University Students’ Theatre Festival will also be held as scheduled, including sections such as ‘Original Play Performances’, ‘Classic Play Creation’, ‘Community Incubation and Co-construction’, ‘Theatre into Campus’, and ‘Students into Theatre’. The entire festival is open from 9/16 to 12/8, with specific business status subject to the day’s opening conditions.
