Hive Contemporary Art Center is honored to announce the presentation of artist Zhang Ji’s latest solo exhibition ‘She’ at the Hive Shanghai main space, commencing on November 6, 2024. This marks the artist’s fifth major solo exhibition following ‘Hive·Generation Thirty-Seventh Zhang Ji: Sugar (Kundalini)’, Hive Beijing (2020); ‘Dance (Bardo)’, West Bund Art Center (2021); ‘Flame (Manas)’, Long Museum (2023); and ‘Yao (Sign)’, Soho Howse (2023). Curated by independent curator Yang Zi, the exhibition will run until December 11.
‘She’ encompasses an inseparable series of paintings. A distinct characteristic is the artist’s intent to sever ties with the known painting lineage, yet without flaunting this detachment, he honestly retains traces of his immersion within it. This has often led to him being mistakenly categorized as an ‘abstract expressionist’ painter who works based on emotions and inspirations — even though in actual practice, he is capable of immersing himself in a fully committed, selfless state. We can discern his continuous decision-making habits in the creative process. When selecting pigments, dyes, and other media (wax, charcoal, and resin), Zhang Ji demonstrates a scientific spirit. He repeatedly ponders and compares the sensory effects that different pigments can trigger when applied to color card samples. Compared to the lengthy pigment research process, the rhythm of his decision-making during painting is more dense and invisible.
Opening hours: 11/6-12/11. Specific business status is subject to the daily opening conditions.
