Wushibie Tunnel was constructed in 1936, initially designed for two-way traffic. Due to the gradual increase in vehicle flow, the new Aogu Tunnel was completed in 1972. Consequently, Wushibie Tunnel was changed from two-way to one-way traffic, accommodating vehicles traveling north from Hualien, while the southbound traffic was managed by the new Aogu Tunnel. It is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
