The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts will hold the ninth Asian Art Biennale in November this year. The Asian Biennale is convened by independent curator Fang Yanxiang from Taiwan. Asli Seven from Turkey and France, Haeju Kim from South Korea, Merv Espina from the Philippines, and Anne Davidian of Armenian descent are invited to form an international curatorial team. The exhibition is named ‘How to Hold Your Breath’. The curatorial team reverses the meaning of ‘don’t hold your breath’. Originally, it meant not to expect too much. In this exhibition, its meaning is reversed, implying potential hope. The curatorial team mentioned that kumbhaka in Sanskrit describes a specific method of regulating breath in yoga: holding one’s breath can be regarded as one of the oldest and simplest techniques for changing mental states. This biennale hopes to use this body technique of consciousness transformation to invite the audience to hold their breath and wait, focus on the present, readjust the relationship between our body and the natural metabolic rhythm, and then create a space for generating action. Imagine the exhibition as a deep dive before facing an uncertain future. The artists participating in this Asian Biennale come from more than 20 countries in East Asia, Central and West Asia, and the Pacific region, including countries spanning Europe and Asia, or people of Asian descent who have migrated to various parts of the world with diverse cultural backgrounds. A total of 13 new works will be exhibited this time. At this stage, the creation plans of five artists are announced first, opening up a historical perspective on modern political governance and global economic and trade flows in Asia, and interweaving various imaginations generated by the interaction of nature and culture. Let the audience feel and understand the aesthetic connotations and contemporary issues of the Asia-Pacific region from different time and space dimensions.
The full text is open from November 16th to March 2nd. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
