Shuanglin Temple, located in Yunhuang Mountain of Futang Town, Yiwu, was founded by the eminent monk Fu Dashi during the Southern Liang Dynasty.
After 15 centuries, it is renowned both domestically and internationally for its grand scale and the succession of eminent monks. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Shuanglin Temple had over 1200 monk quarters and more than 2000 monks and nuns, earning it the accolade of ‘the most solemn temple in the Zhen Dan country’ and the title of ‘the third in the world, the first in Jiangsu and Zhejiang’. As early as the Tang and Song dynasties, Japanese monks came to Shuanglin in pursuit of its fame. After the Yuan Dynasty, even more Japanese monks visited the temple. Shuanglin monks also went to Japan to spread Buddhism. However, due to historical reasons, Shuanglin Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over a thousand years. By 1997, a Mahavira Hall in Shuanglin Temple, 1.6 meters taller than Hangzhou’s Lingyin Temple, stood proudly at the foot of Yunhuang Mountain. The solemn hall, vivid Buddha statues, and magnificent architecture are truly awe-inspiring. The Shuanglin Iron Pagoda by the Shuanglin Reservoir, despite withstanding the test of time, remains black and shiny, which is truly remarkable. The Stupa of Senghui Fu Dashi on the summit of Yunhuang Mountain behind the Mahavira Hall rises into the clouds with a unique elegance. It is said that after achieving enlightenment at Shuanglin Temple, Fu Dashi built three pure rooms in the valley on the mountaintop to practice and named it Yunhuang Temple. After the master’s passing, some of his ashes were enshrined in this tower. Standing beside the tower, one can see the green pines swaying, the jade-like bamboos standing tall, the ancient Yunhuang Temple with its yellow walls and green tiles, all in tranquility; below, the roads stretch like ribbons, ponds mirror like glass, scattered villages, and the newly built Mahavira Hall in brilliant gold… The pleasant natural scenery and rich charm of Yunhuang Mountain can be fully appreciated.
