Qiushui Villa is a Jiangnan-style courtyard architecture built in the 1930s by Shi Liangcai, a titan of China’s newspaper industry and owner of Shanghai’s ‘Shenbao’ newspaper, named after his beloved wife, Shen Qiushui. Covering an area of approximately 200 square meters, the villa is surrounded by courtyards and enclosed by walls and iron gates along Beishan Road.
Qiushui, originally named Shen Huizhi, was a young courtesan in late Qing Dynasty Shanghai. She later met Shi Liangcai, who shared her love for drumming, and pledged herself to him, moving to Hangzhou. Shi Liangcai, with the financial support from Qiushui’s private wealth, purchased ‘Shenbao’ and ‘Xinwenbao’, becoming a newspaper magnate. However, Shi Liangcai took another concubine and, out of guilt, bought a villa for Qiushui by the West Lake’s Geling, which is now known as Qiushui Villa. Today, Qiushui Villa is part of the Xinxin Hotel, where guests can stay or enjoy tea while admiring the lake views. The villa is open to visitors from 09:00 to 21:00 all year round.Qiushui Villa
