Essence of Lacquer Wood – Chaozhou Woodcarving Art Exhibition is held at the Woodcarving Exhibition Hall of Guangdong Museum. Chaozhou woodcarving is mainly popular in the Chaozhou, Chao’an, Raoping, Shantou, Chenghai, Chaoyang, Jieyang, Puning, Hui Lai, and other areas that were under the jurisdiction of the old Chaozhou Prefecture in eastern Guangdong.
The exhibition, Essence of Lacquer Wood – Chaozhou Woodcarving Art Exhibition, is divided into five sections: Origins, Production, Art, Utility, and Appreciation, showcasing over 200 pieces (sets) of woodcarvings with a rich variety of categories and numerous exquisite pieces. Examples include the grand and detailed gold-painted lacquer screen depicting scenes from the Book of Songs, the intricately carved round crab basket that is lifelike and exquisite, and the uniquely shaped, finely engraved shrines, pavilions, sedan chairs, incense burner covers, food boxes, candy racks, and paper coal tubes… A dazzling array of objects that are colorful and diverse. The curators have made full use of the spacious exhibition hall to realistically reproduce the traditional Chaozhou-style living rooms, bedrooms, and studies, vividly recreating the display and application of woodcarvings in the traditional social life of the Chaozhou people. Visitors are immersed in a rich Chaozhou cultural atmosphere, where they can enjoy and linger over the unique artistic charm and profound cultural significance of Chaozhou woodcarving.
