Located outside the ticket office of the Badaling Great Wall Scenic Area, the Great Wall Museum of China is a specialized museum dedicated to showcasing the history, cultural relics, and stories of the Great Wall. Visiting the museum before ascending the Great Wall can enhance your understanding of its essence and history, making the subsequent journey more rewarding. The museum’s exterior is earth-colored and robust, complemented by black decorations, resembling a watchtower on the Great Wall. The internal pathways are deliberately designed to undulate, with gray brick walls, giving the impression of traversing the Great Wall, which is quite unique.
The museum is not large; you can visit it in sequence along the pathways, which takes approximately half an hour to an hour. The exhibitions within the museum are divided into several sections, including ‘Great Walls Through the Dynasties,’ ‘The Ming Dynasty Great Wall,’ ‘Construction and Equipment,’ ‘Great Wall Battles,’ ‘Economic and Cultural Exchanges,’ and ‘Treasury of Ethnic Arts,’ displaying the historical changes, cultural relics, and stories of the Great Wall over thousands of years. The museum gathers the finest cultural relics unearthed from various sections of the Great Wall, such as weapons, stoves, Qin bricks, and Han tiles, as well as numerous photos and models of Great Wall landscapes and topography. Although the number of exhibits is not as large as in many major museums, it is comprehensive and essence due to its focus on the Great Wall, making it an excellent place to learn about it. Additionally, the museum features inscriptions from past leaders and photos of world leaders visiting the Great Wall, with the famous phrase ‘He who has not been to the Great Wall is not a true man’ inscribed on a plaque that is a popular spot for tourists to take photos. Opening Hours: The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 all year round; it is closed all day on Mondays; and during New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, it is open from 09:00 to 16:00.
