The Beiyang Navy Martyrs Memorial is located on the northern hill of the Beiyang Navy Command Office on Liugong Island, Weihai. It was constructed in 1988 by the Weihai Municipal People’s Government to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Qing Dynasty’s Beiyang Navy (1888-1988). The monument, in the shape of a hexagon, stands 30 meters tall. Relief sculptures are carved on both sides of the monument. The base is made of red granite from Stone Island, and the body is faced with white marble from Laizhou. Designed by Qiu Zhihai and others, and inscribed by Qi Zhizhang, the inscription briefly recounts the formation of the Beiyang Navy and the course of the First Sino-Japanese War. The monument stands among pine forests, appearing from afar like a giant sword piercing the blue sky, symbolizing the Chinese nation’s courage and determination to defend the motherland and resist aggression. Open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day, with specific business status subject to the day’s opening conditions.
