The Shougang Ski Big Air is the world’s first ski big air built in the central urban area. Against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds and with the industrial-style building complex as the background, the scenes of athletes competing are instantly spread in all directions. Every frame will be frozen into a wonderful picture in history. The four hyperbolic cooling towers with a height of 70 meters adjacent to the big air platform become the backdrop for the big air competition.

The unique style quickly becomes the focus captured by media lenses. The cooling towers are supporting equipment of the original Shougang Power Plant. The earliest of the four cooling towers was built in 1978, and the latest was built in 1991. They were in operation until the shutdown of the main steel production process in the old Shougang factory area. At that time, the original Shougang Power Plant adopted power generation processes commonly used in steel mills such as coal-fired, blast furnace pressure difference, and dry quenching of coke.

The main function of the cooling tower is to complete the heat exchange between hot water and air and reduce the temperature of circulating water to provide sufficient cooling water for power generation in the power plant. In order to deeply explore the cultural value of industrial remains in the park and build Olympic competition venues at a high level, Shougang Group has conducted a large number of investigations on site conditions, competition needs, and post-competition utilization.

Successive rounds of planning schemes have been carried out, and finally the submitted plan is formed. After the shutdown of the main steel production process in the old Shougang factory area, the four cooling towers are protected as characteristic landmarks of the factory area. The reinforced cooling towers retain the shocking industrial characteristic space and can be implanted with new functions and injected with new artistic vitality later.
