Changde Apartment, formerly known as ‘Edinburgh Apartment’, is a seven-story building designed by an Italian architect and constructed in 1936. The exterior is adorned with a light pink color interspersed with coffee-colored lines, quietly and modestly situated in a bustling section of Jing’an Temple. The apartment exudes the musty air of old Shanghai. Upon entering, one can see the old Austen elevator, followed by a dimly lit stairwell, with the斑驳 walls bearing the marks of history. In 1939, Eileen Chang lived in Room 51 of this apartment with her aunt, and in 1942, she moved to Room 65 (now Room 60). During her time here, she wrote famous works such as ‘Love in a Fallen City’, ‘The Golden Cangue’, ‘Red Rose and White Rose’, and ‘Seal’. Her piece ‘Apartment Life’ describes everything about life in this building. Hu Lancheng’s depiction of Eileen Chang’s life in ‘This Life This World’ also takes place here. The apartment is not open to the public year-round and does not accept visits from non-residents.
