Bao Dai Bridge, also known as Chang Bridge, is collectively referred to as one of the top ten famous bridges in China alongside Zhao Zhou Bridge and Lu Gou Bridge. During the Yuan He period of the Tang Dynasty, Wang Zhong Shu, the governor of Suzhou, sold his personal treasure belt to fund the construction of this bridge. Local gentry were deeply moved by this act and contributed generously to the bridge’s construction. In honor of Wang’s donation and the bridge’s construction, the bridge was named Bao Dai Bridge. The current Bao Dai Bridge was rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty’s Zheng Tong era. Originally, there were a pair of stone lions at both the north and south ends of the bridge. The pair at the north end still remains, while the pair at the south end has sunk to the riverbed. The bridge is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
