The Cangzhou Iron Lion is located in the southeast of Cangxian County. People call it ‘Roaring to Suppress the Sea’. It was cast during the Later Zhou Dynasty of the Five Dynasties and has a history of more than a thousand years. The iron lion is said to have been made to stop tsunamis and floods. It is an extant cast iron lion with a relatively long history and large size in China. The iron lion is 5.78 meters high, 5.34 meters long and 3.17 meters wide. The huge basin on its back is said to be the lotus seat of Manjusri Bodhisattva. The lion’s body faces south and its head faces southwest. Two left feet are in front and two right feet are behind, presenting a forward posture. It is majestic, striding forward and lifelike. In 1957, the competent department supplemented its items and toes and built a pool and pavilion. There are also iron railings around. After the pavilion was built, because the iron lion could not see the sun, it oxidized quickly. So the pavilion was demolished in 1972. Nowadays, when coming to the scenic area, in addition to seeing the lofty and ancient iron lion, there is also a coin museum nearby that can be visited together.
