Bai Foshan, formerly known as Wei Mountain, stands at an elevation of 370 meters and is located to the north of Jiao Village in Dongping Town, Dongping County, Tai’an City, Shandong Province. Renowned for its grotto sculptures, the mountain is famous both far and wide. Though not towering, it is the head of a ten-mile range that stretches twelve miles from north to south, with dozens of peaks and hills, connected ridges, and对峙 peaks. Bai Foshan is at the southern end, historically described as having an ‘extraordinarily unique mountain shape.’ The mountain resembles a Maitreya Buddha sitting upright, laughing towards the sky, majestic and welcoming guests from all directions while protecting the land of Dongyuan. On the southern side of the mountain top, there are two natural deep holes, ‘Black Cloud Cave’ and ‘White Cloud Cave.’ During the summer and autumn seasons, when overcast and rainy weather approaches, the two caves emit clouds that cover the mountain head, leading to rain the next day. Hence, there is a local saying, ‘When Bai Foshan wears a hat, the old farmer sleeps.’ Circling from the mountain top to the southern hillside, the terrain is steep, resembling a knife-hewn surface, with green pines and cypresses reflecting the Buddhist gate. This is where the grotto sculpture group is located. The Buddha cave group includes the Great Buddha Cave, Small Buddha Cave, Eastern Buddha Cave, Tang Cave, and open-air sculptures, totaling 138 statues, all exquisitely carved and each with its unique expression. Opening hours are from 06:30 to 17:30 all year round.
